I’m one of those people who is increasingly a football (American football) naysayer. I just don’t see how it can be long for this world. The short term injuries are too gruesome. The long term ramifications are too chilling. Frankly, it’s very clearly barbaric. What parent would want their child playing such a game?
That said, I will say, watching the Super Bowl remains great fun. We’ve obviously been blessed with a few good Super Bowls in a row (and it’s hard to forget this is decidedly not the norm), but even still, it’s fun to watch because it’s such a communal activity. And we live in a world of relatively few communal activities these days. It’s something you know basically everyone else is watching.
This makes watching the game more fun. And this makes using Twitter during the game more fun. You feel like you’re a part of something bigger. And, in the big moments, you are, in a way.
It feels like the game HQ has tapped into some of this (as did Beats 1 before it). But I wonder if there will be other experiences that leverage this as well. Or will the Super Bowl be the apex of a truly massively multiplayer real time experience?
